2. Aeration

Rescue Lawn offers this spectacular lawn care service called aeration. It’s also known as soil cultivation, coring, lawn aeration, or just plain punching a whole ton of holes in your lawn. The secret is – the more holes the better. That’s because every hole that is punched into your lawn works in a numerous ways to improve your lawn’s health and appearance. In fact, aeration will cure or relieve nearly every problem that your grass can face.

Regular lawn aeration works wonders. Rescue Lawns special aeration equipment does the most thorough job possible. While other lawn care companies stick with 8 wholes per square foot, Rescue Lawn punches a whopping 12 holes per square foot on most lawns (over 30,000 holes for the average lawn). We even have hand-aerating tools for those hard-to-reach areas of your lawn that most other companies ignore and hope you won’t notice.

Look at these dynamic benefits:

• Improves drainage (instantly!)

• Discharges harmful gases from the root zone (instantly!)

• Diminishes soil compaction (instantly!)

• Reduces water runoff and puddling (instantly!)

• Improves air exchange between the soil and the atmosphere (instantly!)

• Enhances water intake by the grass (instantly!)

• Improves fertilizer uptake and use (within seven days or less)

• Encourages deep grass roots (within three weeks or less)

• Enhances thatch breakdown (within 30 days or less)

• Improves resistance and cushioning of lawn (within 30 days or less)

• Increases tolerance to heat, disease, and drought (long term)

3. Overseeding

Rescue Lawn offers overseeding which is the process of adding new grass to your lawn without disturbing the existing lawn. The purpose is to help make your lawn stronger and thicker overall. In doing this, your lawn will be more resistant to disease, moss, weeds, and traffic.

Also, if your grass happens to be ten years old or older, chances are the turf grass used back at that time does not meet the standards of today. Newer turf grass varieties have been specifically developed to withstand disease, insects, traffic, shady conditions, and drought. They are much more resilient.

Here are some great overseeding points you should be aware of.

• Rescue Lawn recommends aerating your lawn before overseeding.

• Rescue Lawn only overseeds during warmer weather. August  is the first best month in our area and May is the second best month. Regardless, we make sure temperatures are warm during the day and the night. Cool temperatures will dramatically slow down seed germination time. If there are a couple of freezes in that time too, they may even kill the grass.

• Rescue Lawn believes more is better. We are generous with the grass seed we put down for you. We use up to 10 pounds of high-quality grass seed for each 1,000 square feet of grass.

• Rescue Lawn recommends top dressing. If possible, we recommend either applying a light coat of sand or quality soil over the grass seed, or applying a decent amount of sand and then spreading and raking the seed in after. This is a magnificent step most other companies miss.

• Rescue Lawn always applies special seed-starter fertilizer after overseeding.

• Rescue Lawn immediately waters the seed in. Then, we recommend for the first 10 to 14 days, the grass should be kept moist.

• Rescue Lawn reminds our customers that overseeding is another means of controlling weeds and pests.

4. Top Dressing

Rescue Lawn offers a top dressing service which is the process of adding topsoil, sand, or organic soil to your lawn. It is a wonderful means of conditioning, building, and feeding your grass all in one service. Golf courses always top dress as a way to keep their lawns looking spectacular and to promote long-term health, especially with all that traffic.

It is the number one way to have a healthy lawn that can compete against disease, weeds, and moss. There are absolutely no chemicals or “fillers” involved. We only use sand and/or organic soil. The top dressing is spread over the entire lawn, up to 1/4 inch thick.

For your information, most lawns in the county are growing on a poor soil base. By adding sand and organic soil to your lawn, you are improving the soil base and your lawn will become much healthier. You’ll see the difference! This is all the more evident if you also aerate. The sand particles mix in with the clay and loosen it up so that root growth is enhanced. If you choose a top-dressing mix with humus in it, then you have the added benefit of slow-release nutrients for the lawn.

Rescue Lawn offers the following 3 mixes of top dressing.

  • We offer an all-purpose mix. This is a blend of everything your lawn’s soil base could ever want or need to be healthy.
  • We offer straight sand. This is to help with soil conditioning and/or drainage.
  • We also offer a sand/compost mix for adding natural nutrients to your grass.

5. Lawn Repairs

Rescue Lawn offers lawn repair if your lawn is in dismal shape. Sometimes just one or two services alone won’t do the trick. Lawn repair involves the following fabulous services.:

• Rescue Lawn will use a weed spray (systemic herbicide) to kill off weeds. All existing vegetation may be damaged and/or killed.

• Rescue Lawn will cut your lawn down short without damaging it.

• Rescue Lawn will then power rake your lawn. This is a process that removes much of the thatch and moss in your lawn. Thatch is dead plant material that accumulates to form a layer above the soil. This is always present and is in fact beneficial as long as it is just a thin layer. When it becomes too thick, it prevents water, fertilizer, and oxygen from getting to the roots. Generally all grass areas are power raked twice.

• Rescue Lawn will then rake up all loose thatch and moss and remove it from your lawn. If necessary we will use a lawn mower to act like a vacuum and suck up the remaining loose thatch.

• Rescue Lawn then aerates your lawn twice. This puts up to 24 holes per square foot (3 times as many than most competitors). The more holes the better and it helps provide good circulation of air and water, which will help your grass seed germinate.

• Rescue Lawn will top dress your lawn, usually up to a quarter inch.

• Rescue Lawn then generously overseeds your lawn.

• Rescue Lawn finishes up with a seed-starting fertilizing. Then looking after the watering is entirely up to you.

6. New Lawn Installation

Rescue Lawn knows that there are some lawns that truly are beyond repair. In this case, the only realistic solution is to get new sod installed. The golden rule in determining if this is the route you should take is if 50% of your lawn is dead or if the thatch layer is more than one inch thick.

In order to replace your lawn we must first cut it low and spray to kill the existing grass.

Next we level the lawn as needed.

What happens next is up to you. Do you want new sod or do you want to start a new lawn from seed? There are different grades of turf quality and there are varieties of grass seed you can use.

If you want turf we apply a turf-starter fertilizer. Now the turf can be planted. Or we apply seed-starter fertilizer and overseed.

Rescue Lawn offers complimentary on-site quotations for our lawn care services. If you are not sure what you need, just give us a call.
